The "Zionism is racism" fallout

Photo by Gary Roberts/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images Unless you’ve been living under a rock (and there have been times in the past fortnight when that has seemed a not unattractive prospect), you’ll know about the “Zionism is racism” motion that was passed at the Green Party conference in Brighton. The fallout from it has dominated my week, with passions high on all sides. Those of us who spoke against the motion were clear: the policies and approach of this Israeli government are racist, its horrific actions in Gaza constitute genocide, and a campaign of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions is essential.

But supporting a motion that effectively denies Israel the right to exist crossed a very significant red line. In the weeks ahead, the party needs to come together, to work to show everyone, especially Jewish people, that our party is safe for them; and to make our party’s internal processes more representative and effective. The party’s membership has grown threefold in the past year alone.

Our party democracy needs to evolve to meet that. And the task couldn’t be more urgent. The country needs a strong Green Party.

At a time of accelerating climate breakdown and nature collapse, with a crippling cost-of-living crisis and deepening inequality, the Green Party’s bold ideas have never been more necessary. From leaving fossil fuels in the ground to full public ownership of water companies and an emergency brake on rent increases, we are offering solutions that this government won’t go near unless Green pressure forces them to.
